  • On 10 April Shiveluch volcano, located in the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, started its activity with an explosive eruption and the ash plume reached up to 20 km above sea level, spewing out an ash cloud over an area of 108,000 square kilometres.
  • Following this huge eruption, very heavy ashfall (up to 8.5 cm) was reported in Klyuchi rural locality and other nearby cities and villages.
  • According to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), the activity is still ongoing and the latest eruption produced an ash column up to 7 km above sea level.
  • A RED aviation colour code is in effect.

  • The activity of the Shiveluch volcano, located in the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, continues but is decreasing.
  • Following the latest explosion, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), registered an ash plume 5.5 km high above the sea level that extended about 400 km to the south-east from the volcano.
  • According to media reports, the villages located about 50 km from the volcano, were covered by a 20 cm layer of dust. The area close to the volcano has been closed to aircraft and residents have been advised to stay indoors.
  • The aviation colour code has been downgraded from RED to ORANGE.

KVERT reported that the ongoing eruption at Sheveluch was generally characterized by explosions, hot avalanches, lava-dome extrusion, and strong fumarolic activity. A daily thermal anomaly was identified in satellite images during 23-30 March. Ash plumes drifted 80 km E during 25-26 and 28-30 March. The Aviation Color Code remained at Orange (the second highest level on a four-color scale). Dates are based on UTC times; specific events are in local time where noted.
