Tropical Cyclone Freddy, Mauritius, Reunion and Madagascar, February 2023BNGRC and UNOCHA reported over 8,000 people were displaced after Tropical Cyclone Freddy made its way across Madagascar from 21 to 22 February 2023. The extent of damage and impact is still being assessed. At least four fatalities were reported: one in the Atsinanana region (Mahanoro district) and three in the Haute Matsiatra region (Fianarantsoa district). BNGRC said that as of 22 February, the storm had affected 16,709 people across the regions of Vatovavy-Fitovinany, Atsimo-Atsinanana and Amoron’i Mania. Around 2,276 homes and 79 schools have been flooded. At least 14 homes and 6 schools have been destroyed by the storm. Media report, as of 22 February, one person was injured and around 500 families evacuated in Mauritius. Flooding from storm surge and high waves was reported in several coastal areas including Mahébourg and Grand-Gaube.
