  • An earthquake of 6.2 M at a depth of 37 km occurred in northern Indonesia on 15 January at 22:29 UTC (16 January at 5:29 local time). The epicentre was located over the sea just west of the coast of southern Aceh Province (northern Sumatra Island) approximately 22 km south of Silabuhan Town (Aceh Singkil Regency, Aceh Province).
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 329,000 people were exposed to moderate shaking.
  • The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reports that the earthquake was felt across four Regencies in the Aceh Province: Aceh Singkil, Central Tapanuli, North Nias, and South Aceh.
  • As of 16 January, no initial reports of any damage or casualties have been reported.
